Playtime is a staple in children’s lives, but not many adults…
When was the last time you played? I mean really played. Outdoors, wind in your hair, laughing and smiling from ear to ear. Were you with a friend or was it with your partner? What were you doing? Did you notice how strong your bond was that day?
Remember in kindergarten, when one of the most rewarding and memorable parts of the day was playing at recess? If you think back, the boy or girl we most liked was the one who shared their play time with us. Well we are not that different now— we still like to spend time with people we can have fun with.
In today’s world we are so busy with our jobs, running our homes, and taking care of our families that finding time to play may seem irresponsible. But the truth is, if you don’t recharge yourself regularly you will soon find yourself, grouchy, tired, depressed, and, finally, alone.
I am not saying that you have to spend all your free time with your partner but it is important to schedule time for the two of you to play together. It really doesn’t matter what your choice of activities is as long as it makes you both feel good (and it doesn’t hurt anyone).
A few activity suggestions are:
Pitch and putt golf (if you are not too serious),
Running, walking or hiking,
Sledding and or snowball fights,
Or anything that gets your blood and heart pumping.
Remember I am not talking about competitive levels here; the idea is to have no stress. The side benefit is the burnt calories!
Even if it is raining out there are lots of things to do together: playing cards or a board game, bowling, putting on your favorite music and dancing your faces off (no one is looking), making a nice meal together (some of my most memorable times have been cooking with a loved one). Or you can pull on your rain gear and go outside and jump in the puddles. When was the last time you did something like that? Wasn’t it fun? What’s stopping you from doing it now?
The bottom line is we all need a break from being too serious and responsible sometimes (even in our relationships) and a great way to relax and unwind with your partner is through a little play time. Chances are you will be in such a good mood afterwards that play time will probably move into the bedroom, you guessed it, for more play time.
Get creative, I’m sure you can come up with some brilliant ideas on how to put more play time and fun back into your relationship. Enjoy life with your partner, now that’s a novel idea! I’d love to hear about some of your favorite play time activities.
