Aja Hannah blogs the unique, thoughtful, and broad-ranging Diaries of a Mixed (Up) Kid: “a work of creative non-fiction in the first-person about the struggle of mixed kids growing up in a still divided nation. We confront the problem of emotional and psychological taunting as well as the mental mindsets that stem from such abuse. Other posts include the developing thoughts on faith, love and sex, and fitting in.”

Why do I write? Should I say something existential? I write, therefore I am. Or artistic? I have the desire in me that must be fed. I cannot help, but to write. Or realistic? It could one day make money and it’s the only thing I’m good at.
I realize that I ended on a preposition, and that these are also all truths. The reason I write on race and other issues is that I actually believe in these things. I want change and not the presidential kind either. This change is for awareness and equality. It is not abstract. It is not for everyone. It is undeniably truthful and passionate, disheartening and hopeful. It isn’t always happy or easy or fun to write either.
I write because I believe, because I want. (I also write because I am a poor public speaker). Where I write. Oppression and derision; walking upstream in the waters of free speech, not drowned out by a hard downstream current of pop life, media frenzies, and political squabbles. So I should write in my happy place…
About my happy place: I do have one. My fiance set me up with a desk in a room dedicated to writing. Still, most nights I end up on the couch, writing through the sound of smut television shows and complaining about distractions. Woe is me.
Beyond the Brochure, a blog for parents applying to private elementary schools in L.A…and what life is really like at some of those schools. She also writes thoughtfully and elegantly about race, politics, motherhood, and other topics at OpenSalon. She gives us a glimpse into her well-appointed Blogger Space below.
My home office is my favorite place to work. If I’m out and need to write something down I use iPhone notes. This photo was taken in the morning, which is my best time to blog. Of course, late at night is good too.
Blogger Space is a series devoted to showcasing the spaces bloggers choose to write. Want to show off your digs? Send a photo of your space, a blurb about why you write where you do, and a link to your blog to [email protected].
