Susanna Morgan’s Blogger Space

I adore Susanna Morgan. She writes the dry, oh-so dry blog NotJune, in which she tells the truth about motherhood: that none of us is perfect, that in spite of loving our kids to death, we sometimes want to lock them in the closet while we suck down a couple of mojitos. When I write, I write from the sofa. Though my desk is just a few feet away I instead recline on my cushy velvet sofa and face my Wall of Happiness. My Wall of Happiness hosts my collection of nautical knickknacks that I collect at the Santa Monica Airport Flea Market, the Long Beach Flea Market, HomeGoods and estate sales. I wish I lived back east so I could say “tag sales” like Martha does. But I digress.

The Wall stretches the length of our house’s great room but this section has some of my favorites in it.  The wooden “The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time” is one of my favorite non-animate things in the house. I totally believe in the sentiment and struggle with it daily. Below that is my giant metal crab, because although I wish I were the person who didn’t see a giant metal crab on clearance and have to take it home, I am.

Above the crab are a conch shell my boys and I got on vacation in Nassau on a Disney cruise. My older son dug the geode out of the Earth when we were on a mom and son fossil dig in Utah.  In between those two family vacation souvenirs is a picture of my boys holding a bird and with a bird on their heads. I am a sucker for any opportunity to be photographed with an animal, especially on vacation, and always have them do it. I’ve got an extensive collection of photos of the boys with alligators, snakes, emus, miniature ponies, stingrays and more.

My stack of books, also one of my favorite vignettes in the house, features a book of Southern furniture from Colonial Williamsburg that includes prominently a sofa I helped conserve during a college internship. Above that is “The Dangerous Book for Boys” in honor of my sons. Topping those two semi-conservative choices is a humor book/parenting guide “How to Traumatize Your Children” form KNOCK KNOCK’s “The Self-Hurt Series.” It’s hilarious for all the wrong reasons, sort of like my own parenting skills.

My salt rock lamp just makes me feel good and helps me think of positive energy going out to the room. Next to it is a completely geographically wrong globe that matched the colors of my room. So there.  The seascape and shadowboxed shells were both scavenged from vintage sales. So cliché but I love my house to be full of stories.
