It’s sort of ironic to follow yesterday’s post, Am I a Narcissist?, with today’s topic: What’s good about me? but a funny thing happened last night.
I had fun.
It wasn’t the normal fun that I have with my soccer mom friend. Or the fun I have chatting with Son #1 about his day at college. Or even the fun I have reminiscing about crazy childhood adventures with my sister. I had the kind of fun that I used to have with Husband #2.
I spent the evening not thinking about divorce or rejection or what to do the next time Husband #2 and I interact. By not thinking about those things, I had time to talk about new and old music (Fitz and the Tantrums, anyone?), dreams of Norway, career aspirations, cooking, and meaningless trivia. It wasn’t a date (oh God, I’m not even divorced yet). It was just a few friends hanging out with each other and laughing.
It was the kind of fun that Husband #2 and I used to do in the early years of our relationship.
So last night we shared humorous horror stories about crazy parents, growing older, dance classes, and which celebrity is the hottest. We argued about the merits of country music and rap. Hey, I’m not a fan but not everyone likes my choice of big hair 80’s ballads or powdered wig classical. But when we tried to stump each other with random songs on the jukebox, I still came up singing the most lyrics. I am now dubbed Queen of Singing.
Part of the fun? I was reminded of my good traits.
- Loyal – I will stick up for those I love
- Funny – I can crack you up
- Smart – I can apply what I know
- Creative – I like to make things
- Articulate – I can put ideas into words
- Motivated – I can put my mind and efforts into what I do
- Happy – I like the joy of simple things
- Curious – I like to read and learn and travel
- Content – I like home and friends and family
- Spiritual – I believe in God
- Generous – I give with my heart
- Interesting – I have a lot to share
- Optimistic – I always believe there is hope
My late night out helped to remind me I’m heading back to who I used to be.
For a change, Son #1 left the porch light on for me.
