For whatever reason, my six-year-old son has been coming home talking about butlers. We don’t actually know anyone with a butler, so I’m assuming this came from a story they’ve read in school or some other media source (Possibly they’re watching Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous in first grade?). He takes great delight in the word but doesn’t seem to actually know what it means (I’ve heard explanations ranging from “someone who has a lot of buttons” to “someone who has a butt.”)
He finally asked me last night what the word meant. I explained that it was someone who took care of all your needs, prepared your food, helped you get dressed, reminded you of things you needed to do and generally helped you out better. “So,” he asked, “are you a butler?” Sigh.
