My lovah arrived last Wednesday night and left Monday, so we we had almost 5 full days together.
Heaven.
But we also had kids. Tons and tons of them.
Heaps of kids, in fact.
I always have Thanksgiving day because Stanley is a Brit and doesn’t really care but in addition, I was on for the weekend, so yes, my lovah was here and we had kid immersion.
We had Wednesday night alone and Sunday night alone, thank you Jesus, for bookend sex.
Thanksgiving Day we spent with my family. It was pretty great. Al had spent good time beforehand plotting 1000 ways to avert conversations away from Obamacare, bless his heart, but it came in handy. Then after dinner we watched Life of Pi on cable. I fell asleep 20 minutes before the end.
Wait, what?
(actually it was really good, the kids all liked it, I want to see the end and read the book)
On Friday we did yard work and went and saw Catching Fire with my little fangirls. It was really good but we were late and had to sit on the 2nd row. They took their Katniss doll.
The kids are really doing great with Al. I looked in the back seat once and the little girls each had a head on his shoulders. It was very sweet. They are giving him lots of impromtu hugs and squeezes. It is pretty awesome to see them respond to him like that. But who wouldn’t, he is the sweetest thing ever.
Then on Saturday the mixology happened.
His son was flying back here from his Thanksgiving break from college. The plan was for Al and I to pick him up from the airport and take him back to school, 90 miles from here. But as it turns out, his dorm didn’t open until noon Sunday. So, for the first time ever, one of his kids met my kids. They do live 1000 miles apart after all, so it isn’t like it’s been convenient, but we have been really careful not to push our relationship on to anyone of them too quickly. It’s been really important to us both that the kids were ready for us to move on. We have both been so nervous about it.
Well, not only did they meet, they spent the next 18 hours together. It went GREAT. I don’t know what Al and I were so worried about! His son was charming (just like his dad) and the girls gazed at him with wide sparkly eyes, yes, he is a cute 18 year-old,
and The Boy hung on his every ultimately cool word.
They laughed together all day and really it couldn’t have gone better. On Sunday, we got up and made the trek, with the heap of kids, to college. He told me that his son had remarked to him alone that it was obvious that my kids like him very much, and Al said he got to say his planned speech that my kids have a dad, just like his kids have a dad and that he just wants to be a bonus person in their lives and to love their mom.
It was a super fun day but we were super glad when Stanley came in to swap.
Of course we were dead tired.
BUT NOT TOO TIRED.
I said, “Are you sure you are still interested in me as a woman? Because you sure have had a whole lot of observation opportunities of me as a mom.” (Bless his heart for putting up with me.)
And him, being perfect said he feels like this guy every time he sees me,
I mean, really.
He was always going to get lucky, but now he was going to get really, really lucky.
It was all pretty awesome and I didn’t need my pursebrick once.
I was very thankful for the easy mixing.
