I love fall fashion, the cozy, warm fabrics, the textured sweaters and especially shoes that don’t show my toes. It is such an exciting time (for me anyway) as we can eagerly look forward to being able to escape the heat of summer and maybe, finally attempt to add at least one layer to our outfits, maybe a scarf, sweater or even a jacket.
In an era where anything goes, with so many designers having so many wonderfully different fashion stories to tell, it’s difficult to know where to start. I have found that a lot of what was seen at Fashion Week has yet to translate to us, the retail masses.
I have searched and researched a multitude of fashion shows and fashion sites and this is what I feel to be the must haves for this fall.
1. 60’s Silhouettes
After spending the summer binge-watching Mad Men with my daughter, I have fallen in love with the clothing from this time period and I can’t help but think that some of the designers did too! The 60’s are truly alive and well again. Sleek, short, (yes, mini skirts are back) modern shapes with clean lines. Pick a simple shift or sheath style for a dress that you will want to wear forever. A-line skirts worn above the knee with a turtleneck sweater are also a great look. Feelin’ groovy!
2. Sneakers
I think we have to thank Designers like Channel and Dior for elevating the sneaker from a shoe of purpose to a true fashion statement. Bright colors, multicolored or white, low or high-top, its just a matter of choice. Missoni has even joined forces with Converse and the result is really beautiful.
3. Head to Toe Knits
Lush, soft, textured, Fair Isle, slim and over-sized. The on-trend sweater style of the moment is paired with matching pants. Another wonderful look is over-sized sweaters worn with mid-calf-length skirts, or my favorite, a sweater dress. Statement-making knits, comfortable and stylish at the same time. You may want to invest in a long sweater coat as the 70’s trend is just around the corner to be back in style.
4. Prints
Abstract, graphic, florals and fauna. Bold, rich color or dark and moody. On dresses, skirts, pants and coats. Patterns that create an energy of their own bringing a breath of spring to the fall landscape.
5. Gray
Fifty shades of gray and more! In every form of clothing, boots, sneakers and handbags. Metallic silver and pewter as well. From heather gray to charcoal. A great fashion staple for any wardrobe that you will wear for years to come. A monochromatic look worn head to toe makes the strongest impact.
6. Leopard
Call of the wild. Leopard is everywhere: on blouses and shirts, jackets and boots. Handbags too! The real statement piece here is the full length coat. I really like the look when used as an accent piece such as a great handbag or shoe.
7. Python
Another exotic pattern for fall. On just about anything you can wear or carry. I really have to mention the Altuzarra collection for Target. It really covers a lot of the trends for fall. Python, velvet, embellishment and floral. This collection also has a great affordable over the knee black boot.
8. Embellishment
Flowers, lace, sequins, faux gems, feathers, fringe, handcrafted touches, fur. On everything, even shoes! You name it; you will probably be able to find it. My only caution here is use sparingly. Pick one piece you love and incorporate into your everyday wardrobe.
9. Blanket Coats
Another wonderful comfy style. Styles with sleeves to capes. Short and long, an easy layer of warmth to wear over anything you already own to easily bring you stylishly into fall.
10. Boots
These boots were made for walkin’. Mod boots to go with the 60’s fashions that come up to the knee and higher and all the way back down to ankle-grazing booties. Can’t forget the one western trend that is pretty timeless-cowboy boots!
I wanted to add a quick word about the new asymmetrical skirts. Just take your high/low from last season or the season before and wear sideways!
The most important fashion tip; always be yourself and have fun!
