When did doing something “Like a Girl” become an insult?
In a new ad campaign, feminine product company Always aims to turn the phrase “like a girl” into a positive thing.
In the beginning of the video, women, and men of all ages are asked to demonstrate what it looks like to run like a girl. The older crowd demonstrates hair flipping and waving hands, making running like a girl into an insult. The younger girls run as fast as they can – confidently.
The video reveals that feminine confidence plummets during puberty. Award-winning Director Lauren Greenfield asks the older crowd “What advice do you have to young girls who are told they run like a girl, kick like a girl, hit like a girl, swim like a girl?”
In a powerful response that evokes emotion, a young woman says, “Keep doing it, because it’s working. If somebody else says that running like a girl or kicking like a girl or shooting like a girl is something that you shouldn’t be doing then that’s their problem…if you’re still scoring and you’re still getting to the ball on time and you’re still being first, you’re doing it right, doesn’t matter what they say. I mean yes – I kick like a girl and I swim like a girl and I walk like a girl and I wake up in the morning like a girl because I am a girl and that is not something I should be ashamed of so I’m gonna do it anyway. That’s what they should do.”
Let’s jump on the bandwagon and instill strength in young girls – because why shouldn’t #likeagirl mean amazing things?
