Last Saturday, I spent the evening with four of my dearest friends. To tell you that they were each one-half of a successful couple, while I was the only single one in the mix, could serve to diminish the delightful time I had, were it not for the fact that I felt less like a fifth wheel than I usually do in these situations. But that’s due to the fact that these well-matched, confident people always make me feel like part of the crowd, rather than the single gal I really am.
Eventually, the subject of my love life came up, and I began to regale the party with tales of my latest dating experiences. After all, who better to get this job done than I; the woman who is still living the life mysterious, sifting through the detritus of love-gone-wrong, which can look a lot more romantic or devil-may-care from the outside than it really is. As the conversation wound itself around the tidbits of my dating life or lack-there-of, the subject of Internet dating reared its ugly, urban-myth-clad little head, much to my dismay. Truth be told, I hate Internet dating. I find it repugnant because, in my mind, it’s just one more place in the world from which to be rejected by men and I can get plenty of that right here in the 3-D plane of day-to-day existence, thank you very much!
Of course, I voiced my opinions on this loud and clear, should there be even a hint that I might want to re-enter the halls of cyber cruising, where the ecstatic fluttering of hope goes to have its wings clipped. Been there. Done that. Secretly, I envied the couples sitting in front of me because they’d fallen in love back in the day, when chemistry led the charge to the dating pool. Lucky bastards! They never had to slog through the hell of playing the match game gone viral. But rather than the encouragement I usually receive in discussions such as these, to get out there and try it one more time, to my delight, my friends were able to see the humor as well as the horror of it all. And so began a rousing game of Name That Fake Dating Site!
If I had my way, there would be real dating sites which would be crammed, not with sophomoric wanking posers, but the real thing: guys who could be honest about themselves and their needs. This kind of site could save a girl a hell-of-a-lot-of-time, not to mention heartache, as it would all be laid out there and you could simply pick your poison up front or avoid it all together. These are a few that would be available for browsing if only…
itsallaboutme.com – The site where the selfish come home to roost
romanticpipedream.com – The place where someday, your prince won’t come
trustme.com – Need I say more?
mismatch.com – Once again…
indenial.com – For those who are sure they’re ready for a commitment. Or are they?
that’sanotherstory.com – For the real truth tellers
pullnopunches.com – The site that will make you want to punch someone
I’m sure, if you put your mind to it, (a glass or two of wine certainly helps get the creative juices flowing) you too could play this game and invent some fake-dating sites of your own. It’s a fun and frivolous way to spend a Saturday night when you’ve had your fill of cyber-cruising and just need a good laugh. And in the end, a good laugh is better than a good cry any time!
