What are you reading?
I read at least five books a week so I have many favorites, but some have stuck with me more than others. Even though my favorite genre is suspense, as a divorced mom I love romance books with varying levels of heat to them. It’s nice to escape into a book to experience the characters path to love even if there’s not always a happily ever after ending. Here are five of my favorite books:
1. The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks
The Longest Ride tells the story of new love struggling to make it while also capturing our hearts with the telling of an old love story that lasted a lifetime. (I recommend reading ALL of Nicholas Spark’s books.)
2. If I Stay by Gayle Forman
After losing her family in a horrific car wreck, the only survivor, Mia, a comatose teenage girl, observes the aftermath. As her grandparents, boyfriend and friends struggle with their grief, Mia battles with love and loss, unsure if she wants to go on. This book explores first love, difficult decisions and grief, taking the reader on an emotional rollercoaster ride. (There’s a sequel to this book, Where She Went.)
3. The Fault In Our Stars by John Green:
This book also tugs at our emotions. As two teenagers struggle for their lives, their illnesses bring them together. They get a taste of first love as they bond. This tear jerker will remind you to count your blessings while the many ups and downs of this book will also keep you hooked to the end.
4. Unfinished Business by Nora Roberts
This is my favorite kind of love story with the “What might have been” theme. Long lost loves are reunited only to realize a misunderstanding has kept them apart for years. As they get to know each other again, the feelings that bonded them so long ago begin to heat up again. If you have a long lost love, this book will give you hope of finding them again someday. This author has written countless romance books if lost love romances aren’t your preference.
5. Fifty Shades Trilogy: Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, Fifty Shades Freed by E.L. James
I recommend this trio ONLY because I think women need to learn to be more open minded. If nothing else, just read the series to get a giggle. It’s not the quality of the writing that made these books such a hit, it’s the “kinky” factor. Reading these books won’t turn you into a kinky nympho overnight but it might make you at least think about giving a future boyfriend a slap on his ass. Who knows, maybe it will awaken the hidden kinky side of you. If not, at least it will give you something different to talk about with your friends.
While four out of five of these books have been made into movies, it’s not why I chose them. I have read all of these books but haven’t seen any of the movies. I picked them because they give the reader hope that there is always love waiting to be discovered out there.
If you’re on a tight budget like many divorced moms, all of these books are available at most public libraries. I use my library card to check them out online as ebooks through the library website, downloading them on my Kindle. If you don’t have a Kindle, these ebooks can also be read on smartphones and computers with the free Kindle app. If your prefer to read actual books also check used bookstores for the above authors and titles. There are also used book sellers online.
