What an exciting time we live in with new inventions and ideas continually making our lives more comfortable, convenient, and fulfilling! Imagine the possibilities and how we may all benefit from 3D printers, smart technology, and robotics, to name a few!
Divorce is another area of life that has benefitted from new attitudes, creativity, and innovation. In short, divorce today is not what your mom or grandma experienced!
Here are some of the modern twists on older ways of living all aspects of divorce:
A Divorce eulogy
A divorce party is so 2005! To be fair, when your mom or grandma divorced, the “divorce party” was not yet a trend. Good for the creators of this movement, though, who recognized the need for newly divorced people to let off some steam after such a stressful ordeal! And, with more open-minded attitudes about divorce removing so much of the stigma, why not have some fun and celebrate the beginning of a new chapter?
The divorce eulogy, according to Annette Marie Westwood of Beverly Hills Eulogy, takes the divorce party to a new level.
Westwood explained that she started her company so women could get the proper respect they deserve after their divorce. “People are treated cold and callously after a divorce, which is the death of the married,” she explained “if someone dies, they treat them with respect. People are supposed to die. It’s life’s only certainty. People aren’t supposed to get divorced. They promised to remain married until they die.”
Westwood explained that she would never compare a divorce eulogy to a divorce party because her events are healing and bring closure to the divorcee’; but, that is not to say they’re not fun! Although guests arrive in all black, as if attending a funeral, and a eulogy is delivered by the divorcee’ (which can be a song, poem, or even burning of the wedding dress, if so desired), they are an uplifting and fun occasion!
Annette describes her events as upscale, and nothing like other divorce parties which are often more like a tacky bachelorette party. Her service may include a make-over, fitness training, life coaching, and even registering for fabulous gifts to help kick off the next phase of life!
Greeting cards for the divorced
With the prevalence of divorce and co-parenting relationships, former spouses, Ken Bass and Wanda Bass, recognized the need for greeting cards designed to express the sentiments of special occasions appropriately worded for people in their same situation. Since 2009, this former couple has filled this need through their brand, X Cards!
The X Cards collection includes both humorous and heartfelt greetings intended to help promote healing and peace between exes, stepparents, and others involved in these complicated relationships. The brand began with Wanda’s attempts to convert blank greeting cards into cards for Ken because none were readily available on the market for ex-husbands. Ken credits her persistence in continuing to reach out to him in a positive way after their divorce as instrumental in how amicable their relationship is now, and he is confident that their cards can help do the same for others!
Making money from selling your wedding ring.
Several years ago, when I divorced, the only option I was aware of to sell my ring was the local pawn shop or a jeweler. I was disappointed to receive far less than the value of my ring; but, no other option existed to rid myself of my marriage jewelry and to help me earn some money to start over with. Divorcees of today have more appealing options that can also net them a bigger return on their valuables!
Worthy.com is a New York City-based luxury auction house that will remove all of the hassle from your jewelry selling experience by giving you an instant market value quote and making arrangements to have the ring shipped to them for grading, cleaning, and to be photographed for auction. The seller is invited to view the auction and make the final approval of the top bid.
Worthy guarantees the security of the seller’s ring through the process, makes rapid payment directly to the seller’s bank account, and prides itself on helping women to get the fresh start they deserve by walking away from the sale of their ring with the most money possible!
The divorce selfie
In years past, divorced people were typically ashamed of their status, and usually avoided contact with their ex like the plague! Another sign of the times is the recent social media trend of taking a divorce selfie immediately following the court hearing with one’s ex! One possible interpretation of the photographic craze is that it is evidence of more evolved attitudes between exes who see no need to be hostile, especially if they will continue a relationship as co-parents.
Tech communication and organization for co-parents
Divorced parents have many responsibilities to manage and communicate, but not always the desire or ability to do so amicably. After a messy divorce, a Truece co-founder was sitting in a parking lot, waiting to pick up his daughters. His ex was late – again – and he found himself thinking, “I wish there was a way to document this. There must be an app for that!” In his search he found few options, and was inspired to create a mobile co-parenting tool that would help others avoid the same struggle and frustration.
Truece is a mobile app and SaaS software that allows today’s co-parent to manage the details of their daily life. Features include messenger, finance tracker, geo-fence location that automatically prompts users to log overnights, storage for important documents, and a shared family calendar. When requested by user, Truece can compile reports of court-admissible information about custody time, communication between the user and their ex, financial transactions, and more.
With Truece, users can streamline the details of co-parenting in one central, easy to use application. All information is stored on a secure server and is searchable by keyword, providing a safe, intuitive, and comprehensive form of record keeping. Unlike competitors, Truece does not require both parties of a divorce to use our app, so if the ex refuses to use it, it’s not a problem!
The app will be available for download in Beta stores on Android this July and on iOS shortly thereafter! Look for the official launch early in 2018.
It’s a brand new world for divorce! New products, services, trends, and attitudes are re-shaping the process and recovery from one of life’s most significant events. Past divorces have inspired innovations to ease the pain for those in the future, and the future is certainly brighter!
