For many single, divorced, and widowed women, Valentine’s Day brings sadness and anxiety. If you’re starting to get a little anxious about spending another Valentine’s Day alone, here are ten ways to that are sure to beat the Valentine Blues!
First and foremost, stay busy. Plan some perks for yourself, share time with some friends and family and work in some random acts of kindness. You will feel better and never catch the blues! Valentine’s Day is on a Friday this year. Plan your week accordingly.
Sunday:
1. Get a mani /pedi- It’s a small perk, but worth it if you are feeling down or anxious. What girl doesn’t feel better, a little more put together, with a manicure?
2. Plan a family dinner. Family keeps you grounded! They love you with or without a man. You love them regardless as well. Family dinners give you a sense of warmth and belonging and build memories and traditions. If your biological family is far away, “Family” doesn’t have to be defined as blood relatives, but those who provide our safety net and unconditional love.
Monday:
3. Do something at home that makes you happy. Allow yourself to day dream. Surf Pinterest- explore home decor, recipes, crafts or exotic places. If Pinterest isn’t your thing, watch chick flicks, or catch up calling or emailing some old friends. We all have relationships we have neglected. Take a night a catch up!
4. Spend a little time being introspective. Aren’t you happier without the “wrong” man in your life? What does your perfect man look like on paper? What characteristics should he definitely NOT have? What characteristics did your ex have that were toxic to you? You should be feeling happier that “no boyfriend is better than a bad boyfriend.”
Tuesday:
5. Make a nice dinner and have your favorite wine or beverage. If you live alone, invite a friend or family member to join you. Wine and dinners are much more fun when shared!
6. Buy fresh flowers for your table. They will be pretty to look at the rest of the week!
Wednesday:
7. Make valentine cookies and/or cupcakes. When my children were little they loved this! We decorated cookies and cupcakes with candy hearts and red hot candies. If you don’t have kids, how about grandchildren? If they live nearby, you can always deliver them!
Need additional ideas for off-loading your goodies? Share the love with someone!
- Take them to your office! Or maybe give them to a specific co-worker or associate.
- Take them to the police or fire station as a “thank you” for their public service. Police and fire fighters have to work every holiday and don’t get to spend their time with the ones they love. Your treats would be appreciated!
Thursday:
8. Treat yourself to dinner out!
9. Go window shopping. Set a pre-determined limit before you go. Make a game out of it, you are only allowed to buy something if it is under the spending allowance. If not, you have to move on. This is modified shopping therapy that you won’t feel guilty about later!
Friday:
10. Go away for the weekend! Take advantage of a change of scenery. Go visit a friend or family member who lives within driving distance. (or a short flight, if you can do it on short notice!) A change of scenery does a person good!
Saturday:
While the week isn’t quite over, you made it through the holiday! You should be proud of yourself! You made it without being sad, pouting or making bad decisions. To end the week on a positive note, how about a random act of kindness like paying it forward when you stop for coffee or fast food? You are not limited to those options, but those are fairly painless.
There are so many options for keeping yourself busy, these are just a few! Wishing everyone a happy week with a few perks along the way. Stay positive! Just remember- no drunken dialing/texting. You’ll be happier if you don’t!
