Whether you were married for 1 year or for 20 years, you finally have the opportunity to focus a little on what it is you want.  Gone are the days of worrying about your husband and what he wants, it's time to figure out what it is you want and go after it.

Figuring out what you want starts with self-awareness. Going after what you want also takes self-awareness.

Below are the 5 reasons being self-aware can get you what you want out of life.

1. Getting Clear On What You Really Want:

Being self-aware helps you get clear on what you really want. There are times in life when you go along with the crowd regardless of what you really want, like when your friends all decide to create a book club, but you would much rather have started taking yoga classes, but when it comes to big goals - those are up to you to decide on.  Whether you're newly divorced or not, being single gives you time to focus on you and what a great thing that is!

Get still, really think about what changes you want to make and decide what it'll look like. Unsure about what it is? Go with your gut and then give yourself the 5 Why's test. If you feel like a new job is what your big goal should be, ask yourself why. Ask yourself why 4 more times to really get at the heart of why you believe that should be your goal and you'll not also be surer, but you will have a clear, concise goal to create.

2. It's About You, Not Others:

Haters are gonna hate, but you're your own biggest fan. Any time you start making a change in your life, there's someone there to make you feel uncomfortable about it. You know as well as I do that they're uncomfortable because you're growing and they're not, but that doesn't make it any easier to hear. So as the wise Taylor Swift would say, you gotta shake it off, shake it off, shake it off. The way to do that is to get still, focus on where you're going rather than where you've been, and be aware of how each of your decisions is helping you move forward. You're not stuck, you're self-aware and using it as your secret weapon to help you get ahead.

3. Getting Unstuck:

When things don't go as planned, being self-aware stops the blame game and allows you to fix what needs to be fixed and finally move on. It's so tiring to stay stuck when things don't go well, but when you become self-aware, you can own what went wrong - whether it's your fault or someone else's. When you get out of that blame game, you can identify the problem, fix it, and move on! That's it! There's a power that comes with being confidently self-aware.

This power gives you the chance to say, "sometimes I make mistakes" without all the drama that comes with someone else pointing them out! When you become self-aware, you identify your negatives, yes, but also your positives and you get to choose to focus on the fact that you are a rock star and deserve everything you're going after!

4. The Power To Change Course:

Being self-aware gives you veto power. Halfway through your journey towards your goal, you may realize that it isn't really what you want. Being self-aware not only helps you realize this faster, but it helps you understand why so you can make the right changes. If your big goal is to get a new job, but halfway through you realize it isn't a new job you want, it's a new career, you have this huge opportunity to go deep within and figure out what that means for you. The only way to achieve that is to be self-aware.

5. You Are In The Driver's Seat:

When good things happen, you realize they happened because you made them happen. I do believe there's a certain amount of fate and destiny that plays a role in our lives, but getting the big job, the new car or the great new relationship don't happen purely by chance - you have to make them happen!

Because of your self-awareness, you get to pat yourself on the back on a job well done when you achieve your goals.  You get to give yourself a little celebratory party even when you achieve the little goals on the way towards your big goals. Why? Because you went deep within and you realized what you needed to do to make them happen.

So how do you become more self-aware? You have to get to know yourself. Ask yourself all the questions you would ask someone new in your life and jot them down in a journal. Spend time every day journaling without agenda. Do it to get things out and then go back and re-read what you have.

You'll realize more about yourself in doing this than you every thought possible. Not a big writer? That's ok! In today's day and age, there are so many ways to get your thoughts out - speak to text is available on most computers, create voice memos in your phone or on your computer, or do a small video diary every day.

There's a way to get to self-awareness and, as you've read, there's a power in it. Find it and use it to get what you want out of life!
