Merlot is reading Charlotte’s Web by E.B.White.
She comes home from school with study questions.
I keep thinking that Charlotte’s Web is an awful lot like my divorce.
First, Fern will do anything to protect her baby, Wilbur.
She begs, she pleads, she stays the arm that holds the ax.
I know that feeling.
Plus, Wilbur is just looking for a little love.
He has a little taste of freedom and then kind of wants his pen back.
He realizes that some don’t have his best interest in mind
and that by Christmas he might be on the dinner table
(Or live in an apartment with bars on the windows).
He meets some friends that help him.
Charlotte is a great friend.
But some aren’t so great like Templeton
who is kind of like a divorce lawyer.
He sees some of the icky parts of the world.
For instance, Charlotte eats insects to survive.
He realizes that life can be messy.
My life is also like the book in that I have
Oh, yes I do.
(We all know who that is.)
But some times it is
Like last weekend.
Charlotte says,
“what’s a life, anyway? We’re born, we live a little while, we die.
A spider’s life can’t help being something of a mess,
with all this trapping and eating flies. By helping you,
perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle.
Heaven knows anyone’s life can stand a little of that.”
With my divorce, I was just trying to lift up my life a little.
What am I going to do about my pig?
