I Sold My Diamond Online – And It Was Great

In July 2014, the primary diamond FELL OUT of my diamond engagement ring and was lost forever.  Ironically, the next month is when I discovered that my soon to be ex-husband (not soon enough actually) had been leading a double life and his mistress was due with his child in September 2014!  So, was my diamond being lost a “sign” of trouble?  Yes, yes, it was. 

I didn’t know what to do with my ring as my marriage was ending.  So I was really excited when I was given the opportunity by DivorcedMoms to sell my ring to WP Diamonds and write about the process. For obvious reasons, I really had no problem selling the ring and my wedding band. Yes, they were sentimental and marked the love of over 10 years that I thought I had with my now soon to be ex. And, of course, I have my two beautiful children because of this love. 

However, let’s face it, that love is dead or never existed (a topic that I am still working through) and the rings were now a symbol of hurt, disdain, and heartbreak.  And, since the soon to be ex is royally messing with the kids and me financially, heck yeah I wanted to sell those rings!

It is important to note that WP Diamonds did NOT know who I was or that I was going to review their process, and I had no idea if they would even take my ring without the primary stone.  So I went to the website which is super user friendly. After scrolling down the home page I noticed that they are accredited by many organizations, including the Better Business Bureau.  I also read over some of the reviews that were all very positive.  Most importantly their “100% trust guarantee” is what sold me over all else. I started the process online, putting in all of the information that I knew about my ring.  After completing the online form you get a quote right away and can decide if you would like to accept their offer.  If they cannot give you a quote immediately through the online process, then you receive an email and a phone call from their company representative directly. 

Due to my ring lacking a center diamond I received a prompt email and phone call from their representative Jonah.  I have to say that I was very pleased with how respectful and compassionate he was.  Although the company requires that the main stone (which I didn’t have) to be a minimum of .5 carats, Jonah listened as I described the side stones in the ring and the fact that those stones plus my wedding band together definitely had over .5 carats in total. 

Jonah advised me to send my diamonds in to them for appraisal. Then they would give me a quote based on the quality, carats, and metal weight of both my rings. There were times that I did have feelings of regret and sadness about “giving up” the rings, but it was much easier than I thought for sure.

Next, Jonah sent me a detailed email about the process of sending in my rings to his company.  This is where my trust issues set in a little bit because I was putting my diamond rings into a FED EX box and sending them to New York City.  All of us who are going through or who have been through a divorce would have this issue, I think. 

I was happy to see, though, that shipping was free and that my package would be insured.  Also, , the email was very specific and acknowledged that I should not identify that there were diamonds in the package to anyone at FED EX or write on the package  “DIAMONDS ENCLOSED” and that it should be double boxed  for safety.  And, they had me put down WPD and their New York City address which did not identify them as a Diamond company.  Between Jonah’s personal attention and all the time he spent talking with me, and the fact that the company was so careful about not identifying what was in the package, , I felt reassured.

After sending out the package, you are supposed to receive a response in 24 to 48 hours.  After 48 hours, I hadn’t heard anything.  I don’t like to bother people (it’s a problem that I have) so I waited quite awhile to call them to see what was going on.  Jonah answered the phone when I called and immediately remembered who I was (the lady with the missing primary stone- yep that’s me).  It turns out that the FED EX employee had put her name on the package, not mine!

Once the package was identified as mine I received the quote in less than 24 hours, which Jonah explained to me as well. I was more than happy to accept it and thrilled that they would pay me for a ring without the main stone!

The next step in the process was super simple and I just had to fill out an online purchase agreement and provide wire transfer information.  They will send you a check if you would prefer but it takes longer.  I received the wire transfer on the next business day.  Despite the complicated nature of my ring missing the main stone and FED EX’s mix-up, I would recommend WP Diamonds. I really didn’t know what to do with my rings, especially since I had lost that stone. I had thought about pawn shops, but probably would never had tried due to having to face someone in person, and you know, it’s a pawn shop and just seems so sketchy.

For me selling my diamonds was another step in moving on from my broken marriage.  If you are like me, finances are really hard after divorce, and any amount of money helps. Even more important is that you are just opening new doors to new chapters in your life by parting ways with rings that are symbols of a life that you have left behind.
