We shouldn’t be taking divorce advice from Ivana Trump who wears Saint Laurent and spends Christmas Eve in Vienna.
According to her 1995 book, “Ivana describes the challenging recovery period that followed her high-profile divorce, Ivana Trump reveals the supportive letters she received from thousands of women and offers advice to women facing similar difficulties.”
Below are a few quotes from the above-mentioned book. Let’s see how they play out in real life.
“A columnist once said: ‘Ex-wives count for less than zero. They disappear.’ I didn’t accept that.”
For most of us, there isn’t much we can do but accept our new position after being left for another woman. If only we all had the financial resources to fight for ourselves we could refuse to “accept that,” too.
“I myself have decided to be no older than twenty-eight. I encourage you to make the same decision.”
Thanks for the advice. I’ll be sure to pass it along to every woman over 50 who hasn’t worked in decades and finds it hard to get out of bed in the morning after being abandoned by a husband. It’s impossible to be no older than 28 when you feel over the hill and yourself self-esteem has taken a gut shot!
“When you have ‘important jewelry’ you have to worry about it. Who wants to spend their vacation waiting to get into or out of a safe-deposit box?”
Jewelry? Vacation? Now she is just being cruel! Let’s see a show of hands, when was the last time your vacation was disrupted by having to wait to retrieve jewelry from a safe-deposit box?
“Christmas Eve in Vienna is fabulous.”
Christmas Eve in a two bedroom apartment, eating mac and cheese with the kiddos is even more fabulous. The rich and famous, they don’t know what they’re missing!
“There’s nothing wrong with old money, and nothing wrong with new money, either.”
We don’t concern ourselves with whether money is old or new. We’ll pay the mortgage, lights and feed our children with any old kind of money, Ivana!
“I tell you, if I’m going to go through a divorce, I would date again a younger man. Because I have so much energy, there’s no way an older man can keep up with me.”
And we agree, Ivana. Not because we have so much energy. Raising children, working full-time and not having a hefty divorce settlement to depend on can kind of drain a woman. But, there are benefits to dating younger and we’re open to discovering what those are.
Ivana did divorce her way, gave advice based on her station in life. That’s her right but, you and I, we shouldn’t be taking divorce advice from anyone who wears Saint Laurent and spends Christmas Eve in Vienna.
